Does Hemp Smell Like Marijuana?

Cannabis aroma comes mainly from terpenes, not THC. Hemp and marijuana can share the same smell.

Where the smell comes from

Terpenes and related volatile compounds produce cannabis aroma. Both hemp and marijuana cultivars produce them.

What odor cannot tell you

Odor does not indicate THC concentration, so it cannot distinguish hemp from marijuana. Its strength is also a poor guide to quantity.

In litigation

Odor questions arise in suppression and probable cause disputes, particularly where lawful hemp products were present.
