How to Read a Cannabis COA

A practical reading order for attorneys reviewing a cannabis or hemp COA.

By Ted Menadier, MBA

1. Confirm the sample

Check the sample ID, batch or lot, collection date and who collected it. Confirm it matches the material in the case.

2. Check units and basis

Potency may be reported as percent, mg/g or mg/unit, on a dry-weight or as-received basis. Compare like with like.

3. Find THC, THCA and total THC

Locate delta-9 THC and THCA separately, and any total THC figure. Note how total THC was calculated.

4. Note limits and uncertainty

Look for limits of quantitation and any measurement uncertainty. A result near a threshold should be read with them in mind.

5. Look for red flags

  • Sample does not match the case material
  • Missing dates or collector
  • Units inconsistent with other reports
  • Results inconsistent with other COAs for the same lot
