How Cannabis Crop Loss Is Analyzed

Crop loss analysis connects an event to its effect on the crop and then to value.

By Ted Menadier, MBA

Cause

From an industry perspective, the symptoms and timing of damage should be consistent with the claimed cause, such as overspray, smoke, heat loss or equipment failure.

Extent

How much of the crop was affected, and how severely, is documented through counts, photos and comparison with unaffected plants.

Salvage and lost production

Some damaged product retains value. Lost production is measured against a supported baseline.

Value

Lost production is valued at appropriate market pricing for the relevant period.
