Cannabis Yield Estimation

Yield estimates drive value and quantity. The assumptions behind them deserve scrutiny.

By Ted Menadier, MBA

Approaches to yield

Yield can be estimated per plant, per square foot of canopy or from production history. The right approach depends on the setup and the records.

Variables that matter

  • Cultivation method and environment
  • Cultivar
  • Plant size and maturity
  • Management quality
  • Post-harvest weight loss

Common inflating assumptions

Using best-case or marketing yields, counting immature plants as mature, and treating wet weight as finished product all overstate yield.
